Conventionally, digital quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based on square constellation lattice has been considered the most spectrally efficient for RF systems. However, with the advance of cognitive RF systems, even higher spectrum efficiency is desired. In this presentation, we first review some of the historical aspects of modulation constellation design. Next, we aim to develop a suite of novel modulation/coding schemes and associated efficient demodulators to significantly outperform conventional counterparts. The technology proposed in this project will pave the way to a rich research area of unconventional joint modulation/coding design enhancing the performance and spectrum efficiency of virtually all RF systems.

Speaker : Zhiqiang Wu (Wright State University)
 
Dr. Zhiqiang Wu received his BS from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 1993, MS from Peking University in 1996, and PhD from Colorado State University in 2002, all in electrical engineering. He worked as a research engineer for Chinese Academy for Telecommunication Technologies (CATT) from 1996 to 1998. He also worked at West Virginia University Institute of Technology as an assistant professor from 2003 to 2005. He joined Wright State University in 2005 and currently serves as a full professor. He also serves as the co-director of the Center of Excellence on Sensor System Engineering of the state of Ohio. Dr. Wu is the author of national CDMA network management standard of China. He also co-authored one of the first books on multi-carrier transmission technologies for wireless communication. He has published more than 150 technical papers in journals and conferences. He has served as Chair of Acoustic Communication Interest Group of IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia Communications. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Air Force Research Laboratory, Office of Naval Research, and NASA. His work on software defined radio implementation of cognitive radio received the Best Demo Award at IEEE Globecom 2010.
